Republican Party Conventions

The Process

Become involved in Republican Party conventions at every level, beginning in your own neighborhood precinct. If you attend each convention as a delegate (or possibly as an alternate), you will have the opportunity to make your voice heard in the Party's political process.

At each convention level, Republicans participate by determining two primary pieces of business, which you can remember as "people and platform." At each convention, you:

  1. elect people to represent you in Party matters and
  2. pass resolutions to the Republican Party platform, which is the Party's philosophy regarding values, principles, and issues.

The people elected as delegates and alternates and the resolutions passed at each convention level, move up to the next convention level. In some conventions, you also elect your Republican Party officials.

The process is easy to join. It all begins by voting in the Primary Election--by absentee voting, early voting, or voting on the day of the election--and then attending your Precinct Convention later on the night of the Primary Election in your neighborhood.

If at any point except the precinct, you are not elected as a delegate or an alternate and you desire to participate in the next convention level, inquire about the possibility of appearing before the convention's nominations committee.

Below are the levels of conventions:

Precinct Republican Party Convention

Who May Participate: You may attend this convention only if you voted in the Primary Election by absentee voting, early voting, or voting on the day of the election. Be sure to arrive at the convention early or on time!

Location: This convention meets in your neighborhood, usually located in your polling place on the evening of the Primary Election.

Frequency: Every two years on even-numbered years; generally lasts only about an hour; in 2004, Precinct Conventions in Texas convene on March 9.

County/Senatorial District Republican Party Convention

Who May Participate: You must be elected as a delegate or an alternate for this convention at your Precinct Republican Party Convention.

Location: If your county is entirely within one senatorial district, you will have a County Republican Party Convention. However, if your senatorial district spans more than one county, separate conventions will convene for each part of your senatorial district in each county. You will attend your Senatorial District Republican Party Convention for your county.

Frequency: Every two years on even-numbered years; generally lasts all day.  In 2006 this will be on March 25.

 State Republican Party Convention

Who May Participate: You must be elected as a delegate or an alternate for this convention at your County/Senatorial District Republican Party Convention.

Location: In 2006, the Texas State Republican Party Convention will be in San Antonio. Each state holds a State Republican Party Convention.

Frequency: Every two years on even-numbered years; the 2006 convention will be June 2-3 in San Antonio.

National Republican Party Convention

Who May Participate: You must be elected as a delegate or an alternate for this convention at your State Republican Party Convention.

Location: In a prominent U.S. city

Frequency: Every four years prior to the presidential election.  In 2004 this was held August 30 to September 2 in New York City.

Resolutions:
It is critical to bring each of your resolutions in triplicate to the conventions with one resolution to a page. Otherwise your resolutions may not be considered.
